From Oregon Flora, Gardening with Natives:

Riverbank lupine is a striking long-blooming perennial with whorls of bluish purple pea-like flowers rising on vertical spires 1 to 5 feet above its base. Palmate leaves are whorled around the stem like the flowers. The often shrub-like perennial grows quickly and is useful for erosion control as well as meadow restoration, with its nitrogen-fixing roots.
